Gay Marriage: the database engineering perspective

2008 November 25

One of the less visible objections to the legalisation of Gay Marriage is the impact on bureaucratic databases. Many databases, just like many people, are set up to think of marriage as involving one person from a male category and one person from a female category, and cannot handle anything else.

Among other things, this guy discovers that once you remove the “man and woman” limitation you have to add a check to ensure somebody isn’t married to themselves. Because apparently you can’t marry yourself.

Y2Gay. Brilliant name.

What are you supposed to hoard in a basement in preparation for Y2Gay? Condoms? Chick Tracts? I can’t figure out if you need pro-gay or anti-gay resources.
