Nokia means Apple in Finnish

2008 November 27

Look, Nokia has released their latest “full touchscreen” telephone: The 5800 Music XPress.

Remind you of anything? Makes me wonder what part of “nobody uses a Zune” Nokia doesn’t understand…

With this one joining the long list of the me-too phones, such as the LG Renoir, Samsung Omnia, Sony Xperia, Blackberry Dud and not to forget the myriad of HTC Touch incarnations out there, it goes to show the desperation of the established companies for fresh ideas. With just a single model to its name, Apple managed to kickstart a dozing industry, boost the desire for 3G, make touchscreens a staple, and basically rev an aenemic market in smartphones.

One can only wonder what Motorola might be doing in the meantime. Probably thinking up another way to spruce up the RAZR. Touchscreen, perhaps?

Spoken like a true Appleteeny!

Look at it this way: Larger, brighter, more graphical screen? Well-thought-out, intuitive interface? OMG, Apple are ripping off Nokia! Those are exactly the things that made Nokia’s name.

Apple, I admit, did come up with a new great interface that rocked the industry. Effectively they created a new class of device. But why shouldn’t others compete for that market segment by copying and learning? Heck, they might even improve on it. That actually is possible.

And an intriguing aside: I’ve yet to meet an iPhone user who wasn’t already a Mac user.

I know at least 2.

For the record: I don’t have one, nor do I plan to buy an iPhone.

Possible, but given the extreme lack of inspiration… not so soon.

Another thing that they’re totally misisng about the iPhone is that it’s not just a phone with a big glossy touchscreen. Just as the iPod isn’t about the player, the iPhone isn’t about making voice calls. It’s a media-content delivery platform. The true power of iPhone is the AppStore.

Well if you consider me someone you’ve “met”, Sergei, then you’ve met someone who has an iPhone and has never had a Mac. And I’m no Apple fanboy. I’ve got a machine running XP at home and a laptop dual-booting Vista and Ubuntu. I’m big on OS and human interface design, they’re very interesting to me. I’ve played with the Storm and plenty of other phones and the iPhone is exquisitely designed. I absolutely love mine. That’s not to say there aren’t things that drive me nuts about it here and there but they’re minor, and on the whole it’s head and shoulders above any other phone I’ve ever used. And as they’ve pushed out software updates it’s only gotten better.

I am, in fact, posting this from my iPhone.

At last, an issue we find controversial!

Controversial shmontroversial. I’m pretty sure it just comes down to you being jealous of my iPhone.
