Don’t Chu Want Me, Baby?

Other puns I could've used include "Chu on this" and "I Chu-chu-chuse you!"

Obama’s candidate for Energy Secretary will be Steven Chu, who I had never heard of until today. But my reaction to what info I managed to find within a few minutes was definitely good, and my roommate, who unlike me actually knows stuff about science-type stuff, was gleeful about it. I simply enjoyed the idea of an actual nerdy intelligent scientist person in a position that involves science to some extent as opposed to college roommate/brother-in-law/recently defeated elected official du jour, and who already knows how to run and represent a large organization.

There’s people who read this who know stuff about science-type stuff–comment if there is any particular reason that this guy is a good thing (or not).

Those aren’t even the worst cases. The worst you get is when they appoint former lobbyists or representatives of one particular type of industry.

Lisa Jackson and Carol Browner are also impressive choices. Energy policy is going to come from a very different angle. Industries may not be able to argue that energy improvements can’t be made because Chu has real experience in doing precisely that from an engineering standpoint.

I didn’t know anything about Chu before his appointment either, but “I Chu-chu-chuse you!” was definitely the better headline.

Every Pokemon player knows:

“You need 2 Pikachu to solve your energy problems”

I agree with Medieval Cow. When in doubt, always go with a reference from The Simpsons.

While I may not have remembered the name Steven Chu, I do remember being fascinated and excited when I first heard of the work which earned him his Nobel prize, laser cooling.

It is very nice to see a physicist of Chu’s stature being nominated for a position this important.

I can’t say I’m not nervous about appointing a scientist to a political position. I am nervous. But I’m enormously excited too.
