That’s Our Mugabe!

2008 December 12

I don’t post in quantity, but I do post in quality. It’s why you love me so much, Dear Readers. It’s why you love me best. It’s okay. You don’t have to hide it. And because of your tender feelings, I bring you stories like these:

Standup comedian Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu described the outbreak as a “genocidal onslaught on the people of Zimbabwe by the British”

Oh Mugabe! Is there anything you won’t have your cronies say so that the Zanu PF can stay in power just a little longer?

All joking aside, Zimbabwe is getting worse. Even when you thought they’d hit rock bottom, Mugabe commands someone to start digging. Just lately, they’ve had an outbreak of cholera because water treatment has been largely abandoned, and people are drinking any water they can get their hands on. If it’s from a sewer, so be it. This has led to at least 792 deaths that we know about, and an outbreak of up to 60,000 infected people.

And yet what can we do? Mugabe is still in power, and he allows little to no Western aid. What does make it through is often seized. If anything calls for one of Mr. Bush’s vaunted “regime changes”, this seems like it… but just look at how well it worked in Iraq.

I have no solutions, here. Only grief and impotent rage.

Great way to end a Friday, isn’t it?
