The Tropical in Philanthropical
As part of the vetting procedures for Hillary’s move to the State Department the Clintons agreed to release the list of donors to their charity, the William J. Clinton Foundation. And release they did. Today the Dominican Republic woke up to find itself among the top donors over an undetermined period of years. Landing in the 10 to 25 million bracket, we are tied with Saudi Arabia, Australia and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The donations come as a complete surprise to us (explaining how this happens is the subject for a separate blog, but if you’re trying to imagine how this is possible think of Enron or some generic scandal). What adds insult to the injury is that the donations were funneled through the Presidential Council on AIDS (COPRESIDA by its acronym in Spanish). How long has this been going on? Is it the current president’s work or did our previous leader join in the game as well? We’ve had only two presidents in the last 12 years, so the blame can be narrowed to a small set of people.
25 million dollars sent upstream while the DR suffers one of the highest rates of AIDS prevalence in the American continent. We share the island with Haiti which has the highest rate in the continent. COPRESIDA is a perennially underfunded outfit that allows our public officials to tick the boxes in global scores and appear like a functional administration. Instead of enacting obvious relief measures our presidents cry over lack of funds while playing wealthy socialites with taxpayer money. Sickening.
