According to Avert.org:

  • 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS in 2007.
  • 2.7 million people newly infected with HIV in 2007.
  • 2 million people died of AIDS in 2007
  • Over 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.
  • There are more people living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa (22 million) than any other region, combined. This region also saw more AIDS-related deaths than any other region (1.5 million).
  • Of the 9.7 million people living in developing countries who are in immediate need of life-saving AIDS drugs, only 31% (2.99 million) are receiving them.
